Melitta Group’s climate targets validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)

14.04.2026

  • The Science Based Targets initiative has validated the Melitta Group’s climate targets for reducing Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3 emissions
  • The Melitta Group has verified near-term science-based targets and science-based net-zero targets
  • SBTi validation confirms that Melitta’s emissions reduction plan is in line with the 1.5°C target of the Paris Agreement

The Melitta Group’s short- and long-term climate targets were validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) at the end of October 2025. The validation confirms that the climate targets are scientifically sound and consistent with the United Nations Paris Agreement. The aim of the agreement is to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees.

For many years, the Melitta Group has been working consistently to reduce its environmental footprint. The company has reached an important milestone on its path to decarbonisation with the SBTi’s validation of its new ambitious climate targets.

“Validation by the SBTi is an important milestone for the Melitta Group. It confirms that our emissions reduction targets are scientifically sound and will help to limit global warming to 1.5°C,” said Wolfgang Wäntig, the company’s Director of Sustainability. He added: “This recognition strengthens our resolve to continue driving decarbonisation across all areas of our business and to make a significant contribution to climate protection.”

Ambitious short- and long-term climate targets throughout the value chain

In line with its near-term targets, the Melitta Group is committed to reducing its absolute Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 43.15 per cent by 2030, compared to the 2021 baseline. Additionally, the company intends to significantly reduce selected greenhouse gas emissions throughout the value chain (Scope 3). Scope 3 Energy & Industry emissions, which stem from fuel- and energy-related activities, as well as upstream transport and distribution and the use of products sold, are set to fall by 37.5 per cent by 2035 compared to 2021. The Melitta Group also aims to reduce agriculture and forestry-related emissions (Scope 3 FLAG) by 45.5 per cent by 2035 compared to the base year of 2021.

Another key area of focus is working with suppliers. The Melitta Group is committed to ensuring that its suppliers, who are responsible for 70 per cent of the emissions associated with purchased goods and services (Category 3.1), set climate targets by 2030 that meet the requirements of the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi).

A long-term commitment to achieving net zero by 2045

In addition to the short-term targets, the Science Based Targets initiative has validated the Melitta Group’s long-term net-zero targets. The company is committed to reducing its Scope 1 and 2 (Energy & Industry) greenhouse gas emissions by 90 per cent by 2045, as well as reducing its Scope 3 emissions by the same percentage over the same period (in both cases compared to 2021 levels). Furthermore, Scope 3 FLAG emissions are set to decrease by 72 per cent by 2045.

Based on this, the Melitta Group aims to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions to net zero across all scopes by 2045 at the latest, thereby aligning itself with the SBTi Net-Zero Standard. The consistent reduction (decarbonisation) of emissions is a priority in achieving these goals. Only once emissions have been reduced to the required extent will unavoidable residual emissions be offset to a limited extent.

The Science Based Target initiative

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a collaboration between the non-profit environmental organisation CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, the World Resources Institute (WRI), and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). Launched in 2015, it supports companies and financial institutions worldwide in setting emissions reduction targets that are in line with climate science and the goals of the Paris Agreement. The initiative currently has over 12,000 members worldwide, more than 10,000 of whom have had their climate targets successfully validated.
