An ingenious invention

At the beginning of the 20th century, coffee became increasingly popular in Europe. Dresden-based housewife Melitta Bentz was a passionate coffee drinker.

She likes to invite guests over for a cup of coffee. Despite her love of coffee, Melitta Bentz is bothered by the sentence in the cup and the very bitter taste it triggers. She looks for ways to change this – and finally comes up with a simple but ingenious idea: She perforates the bottom of a brass pot and puts a blotting sheet from her son's exercise book in it. This resulted in the world's first coffee filter with paper – and the cornerstone of today's Melitta Group.
