Strong commitment: Trainees donate to  Special school

old

Social commitment is a top priority at the Melitta Group – and our trainees live this value in a special way.

With a lot of commitment and initiative, the trainees of the first year of their apprenticeship collected donations for the Wichernschule in Minden, a special school with a focus on "mental development", at the Minden Christmas party.

Thanks to a generous increase by the company management, a total of 3000 euros in donations has been collected. This flows into a special project: A stream is to be created in the newly created outdoor classroom of the Wichern School. It offers students a safe environment to experiment with water in a playful way. Especially for children with disabilities, it is important to have places like this where they can learn and discover freely and carefree. In an interview, trainees Carlotta Wohlgemuth and Janne Can Celebi talk about how they experienced the organisation of the fundraising campaign and what excites them so much about the concept of the school.

How did you experience the organization of the actions?

Carlotta: It was an exciting challenge to plan everything within a short time. To be precise, we organized a candy bar and a foosball tournament where the employees could win prizes. Even though the planning was done with a fairly short lead time, we  had a lot of fun. Our team of trainees stuck together very well!

Janne: Sure, it was exhausting to organize everything at such short notice, especially the foosball tournament. But in the end, it was worth it because so many colleagues took part and cheered along.

How did it come about that you decided to go to the Wichernschule?

Carlotta: Originally, we simply wanted to donate to Diakonie Minden because it supports such great projects. But then we thought: It would be nice to know exactly where the money is going. So we looked for a concrete project. That's how we came across the school, and when we were on site, the concept with the stream immediately convinced us. It is a place that offers children so much joy and opportunities to explore. We think it's particularly nice that the children can be themselves there without being constantly watched or feeling different. This idea of a safe, free space immediately inspired us – and that's exactly why we wanted to support the project.

What do you particularly like about this project?

Janne: We particularly like the fact that we have the opportunity to have a direct and positive impact on the children's lives. Water is exciting for many children, and this creek gives them the opportunity to experience it in a safer environment. For many children with disabilities, this is otherwise not possible in everyday life.

How did it feel to actually hand over the check?

It was an overwhelming moment. We were really touched to see how happy the representatives of the school were. It was the perfect end to our project!
