Climate

As part of the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), we have set science-based climate targets that are in line with the latest findings in climate research and the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement.

Validated climate targets in line with the 1.5 degree target

SBTi-validated climate targets

Our short- and long-term climate targets have been reviewed and validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

1.5 degree path

Our reduction path is in line with the Paris Climate Agreement and helps to limit global warming to 1.5°C.

Along the entire value chain

We reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Scope 1, 2 and 3 – from our own sites to the supply chain and use of our products.

Near-Term Goals

Short-term climate targets for 2030 and 2035

In the short term, we are concentrating on emission reductions at our own sites and in key parts of our value chain. The SBTi has confirmed these so-called Near-Term Science-Based Targets as scientifically sound.

Our near-term goals:

  • Reduce absolute greenhouse gas emissions in Scope 1 and 2 (Energy & Industry) by 43.15 percent by 2030.
  • Reduce selected Scope 3 emissions (Energy & Industry) – from fuel and energy-related activities, upstream transport and distribution, and the use of products sold – by 37.5 percent by 2035.
  • Reduce agricultural and forestry-related emissions (Scope 3 FLAG) by 45.5 percent by 2035.

(in each case compared to the base year 2021)

Responsibility in the supply chain

Together with our suppliers

A key lever for reducing emissions lies in our supply chain and the cooperation with our suppliers. The Melitta Group is pursuing the goal that suppliers who are responsible for 70 percent of emissions from purchased goods and services set their own climate targets by 2030 according to the criteria of the Science Based Target initiative. In this way, climate protection is anchored step by step along the entire value chain.

Long-term net-zero goals

Our path to net zero by 2045

In addition to the short-term targets, the Science Based Targets initiative has also validated our long-term net-zero targets. In doing so, we commit to reducing our emissions by 2045 at the latest to the point where we reach net-zero along the entire value chain.

  • Our net-zero targets: Achieve net-zero emissions across all scopes by 2045 at the latest based on the SBTi Net-Zero standard
  • Reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Scope 1 and 2 (Energy & Industry) by 90 percent by 2045.
  • Reduce Scope 3 emissions (Energy & Industry) by 90 percent by 2045.

(in each case compared to the base year 2021)

Our priority is to consistently reduce (decarbonize) our emissions.

"The validation of our climate targets by the SBTi is an important milestone for the Melitta Group. It confirms that our emission reduction targets are science-based and contribute to limiting global warming to 1.5 °C. This recognition encourages us to consistently drive decarbonization in all areas of our Group."

What is the Science Based Targets initiative?

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a global partnership of organizations that supports companies in setting science-based climate targets. It examines and validates whether corporate targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions are in line with the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement.

Science-based targets are based on the latest climate research. They determine how much companies must reduce their greenhouse gas emissions to limit global warming to a maximum of 1.5 degrees.
