10th Cofresco Forum Round Table - 14.04.2016

Every fifth shopping basket with food from the supermarket ends up in the trash! A lack of knowledge about the correct storage of food in the home is a decisive factor in the fact that the actual amount of waste exceeds consumers' estimates many times over.

What contribution can packaging make to the preservation of healthy and safe food? Which techniques and materials can also be used by consumers in everyday life? Are there environmentally friendly solutions that can reduce waste?

The 10th Round Table of the Cofresco Forum at the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover on 14 April 2016 provided answers and suggestions to these questions.

Experts spoke on the following topics:

  • How does consumer behaviour influence food quality and safety?
  • What are the risks and benefits of silver and silver coatings in films for food?
  • What are the developments in packaging for fresh products?
  • How can noroviruses be combated with cold plasma?
  • What can packaging contribute to the prevention of food waste? – An overview.

Closely linked to the fight against unnecessary waste is the issue of food safety,  because the knowledge of how to prevent or combat hazards helps to keep food fit for consumption for longer and thus prevent it from having to be thrown away. In the practical part of the round table, there were insights and background knowledge on pathogens that can be transmitted through food.  Experts from the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover will guide the participants through the Research Center for Emerging Infections and Zoonosis (RIZ), which opened in 2014, where they offered a practical insight into the research of zoonoses. i.e. infectious diseases that can be transmitted from animal to human and vice versa. A special feature of the centre is its interdisciplinary approach, which brings together researchers from a wide range of fields and thus helps to identify new solutions.

Afterwards, all participants were invited to exchange ideas with speakers and participants at a "get-together" in an informal atmosphere and to make personal contacts.
